Below we’ve chosen a few of our personal favourites - local secrets just for you!
BEECHWORTH
Beechworth’s Historic Precinct has a UNESCO World Heritage Listing pending! Drop into the information centre for all the key sightseeing spots - don’t miss the magazine, old hospital and gorge waterfall.
Bridge Road Brewers is great for pizza and beer and Last Street Brewery is a popular spot for cordial tastings and lunch.
The Beechworth region also makes some beautiful wines - personal favourites are Willem Kurt, Indigo Vineyard and Glenbosch Wines.
Just out of Beechworth, the Stanley Pub serves excellent food and you can pick up some local Stanley apples and juice from roadside vendors.
RUTHERGLEN
Rutherglen is one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. Known for its rich winemaking heritage, Rutherglen is home to world-class cellar doors and boutique vineyards that have been perfecting their craft for generations.
But Rutherglen offers more than just wine. Local producers, farm gates, and cycling trails add to the experience, creating a perfect day trip for those seeking to savour the best of North East Victoria’s food and wine culture.
Don’t miss the Rutherglen Loops walking/cycling trail, silo art and the award-winning Victoria Hotel or Bonnie at All Saints Winery for lunch! Stanton and Killeen is also a favourite for wine tastings!
FALLS CREEK
Perched high in the Victorian Alps, Falls Creek is a destination that offers adventure in every season. In winter, it transforms into one of Australia’s premier alpine resorts, with ski runs, snowboarding, and cosy après-ski experiences. The snow-covered village atmosphere is a drawcard for families, couples, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
When the snow melts, Falls Creek reveals an entirely different side. Alpine meadows, glistening lakes, and extensive walking and cycling trails make it a haven for summer adventurers. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and wildflower spotting are just a few ways to enjoy the landscape, while the fresh mountain air and spectacular scenery provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation. BRIGHT
Nestled at the base of the Victorian Alps, Bright is one of the High Country’s most beloved destinations. Famous for its tree-lined streets and dazzling seasonal colours, Bright is a town that shines year-round.
Bright is also a gateway to adventure. Visitors can explore alpine trails, cycle along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, or venture further to Falls Creek and Mount Hotham. The town itself offers boutique shopping, vibrant cafés, breweries, and fine dining, all complemented by a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere. Whether you’re chasing outdoor thrills or simply soaking in the scenery, Bright is a must-visit stop on any High Country journey.
Head out towards Harrietville to view the gorgeous snow-capped mountains, and stop for lunch at Tomahawks.
